So said STEURS Stefan on 12/24/2002 -------------------- >> I find it sad, though, that large organizations would rather >> see academic studies than results from smaller commercial >> ventures. They'd rather see it work in a test-tube than in (a >> smaller version of) real life. Am I wrong in stating this? >> It's just a feeling I have. > >Let's put it differently. Large organisations usually have long histories. >In this history they have encountered many people who have promised them: >- higher efficiency (doing the same with less) >- higher productivity (doing more with the same) >- higher effectiveness (doing better with the same) > >Usually it all seemed very straightforward, easy to do, intelligent and all >too often the benefits just were not realised at the end of the day. > >So in the light of the failures of yesterday, organisation may have become >slow adopters. Agreed and understood. >But I don't agree that these organisations need academic studies or >test-tubes. What they need are facts and they will accept facts from >industry, academy and test-tubes combined with proof-of-concept/pilot >projects. They do not appear to accept our facts. They conveniently redefine "fact" to avoid accepting our facts. This is an unapologetically emotional response. >Are you dismissing academic studies or test-tube approaches? In a way, yes. I do not build software in a test tube. Academic studies may help answer the question, "How does this work?" They may answer the question, "Why does this work?" But they cannot answer the simpler and more important question, "Does this work?" Only real-life experience can answer that question. J. B.
