Well, the story is short, even though a Christmas passed already :)

A generic strategy for solving problems, I've found to be useful is:
If I'm banging my head against a problem without (or with little)
        success,
it might be useful to trace it deeper and solve a core problem.

Example, that's relevant to your question:

Software development in a service. The service involves a Customer and a
Developer. A conduct of the service regularly meets problems, that are
well know.

Since the service involves a Customer and a Developer and we can't fix bugs
in a Customer, it might be useful to pay attention of causes of Developer's
behaviour that lead to those well known problems.

Solution I've found to be useful:

1. Focus the Developer on the goal -- providing the service to a Customer.
2. Equip him with a _mind_ tool: a well formed goal frame. Check out NLP
books and web sites for this.
In the software development, the realization of the well formed goal
frame is a Test Driven Development.
3. If the Developer is not a single person but a team -- additionally focus
on their communication. XP practices are, perhaps, the best source of
tools that help to achieve that.

Hope that helps to make my "Silver Bullet" clear.

Sorry if it appears out of context: 500+ xpA messages ahead :)
