Earned Value terminology (was RE: Managing Extreme Programming)

From what I understand, the mapping is rather simple - if you expand 
the acronym BCWP as "budgeted cost of work performed" you get almost 
the word-for-word definition of velocity, i.e. the total effort that 
a given feature had been estimated to require.

In XP "effort" maps directly to "time" (a 1-point story maps to N 
days' work) which maps directly to "cost" if you assume constant 
salary, which is roughly the case.

What's the difference between velocity and BCWP per iteration ? Is it 
that the acronym has a meaning different from the expansion above?
