I didn't say this was a good way of distributing the value to the story level. It's just an easy one to imagine. Coming up with a good way is a much harder job. First, I want to validate my understanding of the picture, then proceed with identifying and developing strategies for the rough spots. I understand that this is what you want. My point is that doing XP makes it impossible to do it. Doing BCWP and ACWP analysis presumes an upfront knowledge of both scope and budget. This concept is antithetical to the concepts of XP. So, management will do it if they want to, but you have to know that either the "XP-ness" of the project will go away, or the numbers will be bogus.
