One month ago I shared my experiences concerning the adoption of
several XP practices in an upcoming e-commerce project. Charlie
asked me to keep the group posted.
During the last month, I was able to get the PM, his boss and a local
XP/Agile champion together for lunch. During this lunch, the
possibility that this could be a full XP project was firmly planted
into everyone's minds. The fruits of that lunch are continuing to
appear.
The plan for the project has evolved from trying a few of the
practices into a full XP project. This evolution began with the
ideas of Stand Up Meetings and User Stories.
As the team discussed our official morning start time, I took the
opportunity to introduce the idea of the daily stand up meeting. I
emphasized that the Customer would need to be present for this
meeting as frequently as possible. Everyone agreed that it would be
a good way to start the day. This introduced the idea that the
Customer would stay closely involved with the development team
throughout the project.
Once the PM accepted the idea of User Stories (at the lunch meeting),
the Planning Game, and all of its implications, came right along. We
had our first User Story meeting yesterday. It was tiring, and
occasionally intense, but the Customer was defining the stories and
the developers were estimating. We had to silence a few
manager/architect types who tried to do some estimating themselves,
but they took it well. Our second User Story session is today.
Development is set to begin in mid-February. I see TDD as our next
big challenge. I have some experience with it, but no one else does,
and I'm the least experienced developer on the project. I'm thinking
it may be a good idea to sit down with the team in early February and
give an introduction to JUnit and TDD.
