Absolutely.  I am only at about 30% coding to managing, but I'm just a director, maybe when I get to C-level, I'll get to code more! ;-)

I definitely share a cube, but I would be happier if we could knock down the walls entirely.

I think you and I have extremely similar ways of appraoching this.  The MBWA was an approach to the issue of having walls.  Not to mention that fact that the VP can't stand it if anyone actually has a discussion outside of an office.
