At my last job, I was routinely pairing with people who didn't know
how to work on that part of the system when we started. Half way
through they would know more about that part than I would because they
could concentrate on that part and that problem.

What happened was I'd become known to all our customers as the person
who could resolve their problems. This started because I'd put in the
effort to learn how neglected but important parts of our software
worked and was repairing them. However, it meant that I had to be
ready to deal with any major disaster. I had to pair with others
because I couldn't be trusted to stay with any task.

Pairing provided the tool needed to build up the expertise in the rest
of the team. Without pairing I would not have been able to program
myself because I understood how our software worked.
