Before then, I'd been heavily praised, appreciated, and rewarded for my technical performance. In fact, that's why my manager made me a manager (not a good reason for making me a manager, but that's what happened). So I strongly believed in my "primacy." Further, and probably worse, I strongly *identified* with my "primacy." Having that perspective, I managed in a way that I no longer see as effective.
