Hello! Lurking on these lists, I haven't seen anybody mention this yet. Mr. Cockburn is obviously too modest, and as I attended his two lectures, I think it's my duty to do the announcement: On March 18, Alistair defended his thesis for the Doctor Philosophiae degree at the University of Oslo, Institute for Informatics. The subject of his thesis was "People and Methodologies in Software Development". You can read a brief synopsis here: <http://www.matnat.uio.no/forskning/utdanning/sammendrag/cockburn.htm> When the doctoral work has proceeded this far at the University of Oslo, the candidate will get his doctoral degree unless new moments surface during the defense of the thesis that show that the conclusions are obviously not correct. So even though the final confirmation has not been published yet - at least that I could find - I think it's safe to say: Congratulations on your doctorate, Alistair!
