Ron, remember that The Oxford Dictionary contains about 650K words
counting every variation, in Italian we have about 427K words without
counting pure Latin words, technical words and without counting
variations. Variations are between 10 to 30 for each word and also we
don't count verbs in the same way. So, at same conditions we would have
between 7millions to 21millions words. Just talking about adjectives and
substantives we could have at least 8-10 words to express similar but
little different meaning that in English have just 1 or 2 words. It is a
mapping problem.
In the case of "funny" in Italian it corresponds to a very long list of
words, these are the most common: divertente, curioso, singolare,
strano, bizzarro, spassoso, piacevole, dilettevole, spiritoso,
ricreativo, ameno, gaio, allegro, scherzoso but there are at least 20
others. But none of these words are offensive.
