On project estimation

 please what is considered a software development project as it is used in extreme programming?
 

 am i right to say  that a software project is a particular software in development say an hospital management system.  if am wrong please explain to me what it is.
 

 

 2. how can the size of a software project be estimated  before actual iterations'  implementation?
 

 i really want to know because i am doing a research that requires these information.
