I gave up on pairing (after about 6-7years of doing it) other than as a tool to be pulled out to deal with certain issues contextually. I see it more of a tool to increase coding ability / discipline and for developing shared understanding. I found if individuals have good coding disciplines then they tend to be way more productive working as individuals but still having social conversations about design.
