So, the question remains, how do I avoid creating more problems than I
solve in the doing?

IIRC, the first time 'round, in 2008 or so, I asked something like "How
can I get my team to adopt TDD?" and the responses all felt to me like
variations on "Why would you want to coerce them, you awful person?",
and because that's how I took it, the conversation went downhill from
there.

So, restating the original question with somewhat more care, and perhaps
a bit more generality, how do I get my team to at least try sound
engineering practices without being an asshole about it?

This is somewhat hypothetical, as I'm between jobs just now anyway, but
I think there's value in discussing _how_ to advocate reasonably, at
least to the level of "*this* is usually a bad idea", "this is sometimes
useful", "this is almost always a good idea", etc.

I'm fully aware that I'm at least half the reason that my previous
threads about this have gone off the rails, but I still need to find
answers. While I would be _delighted_  to find a team that already had a
sound engineering culture, that's extremely rare. I fully expect my next
job to be doing fake Agile when I arrive.
