A good place to start is Paul Wilson's excellent survey paper 
"Uniprocessor Garbage Collection Techniques" which can be downloaded 
from http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/oops/papers.html#bigsurv

There is also a book entitled "Garbage Collection : Algorithms for 
Automatic Dynamic Memory
Management", by Richard Jones and Rafael D. Lins. It is published by Wiley

Also, Richard Jones maintains an excellent web page on (99.9% of all) 
garbage collection publications at
