PhD studentship in program analysis and garbage collection at Kent

Applications are invited for a PhD Research Studentship in program
analysis and garbage collection, starting in September 2006.
The studentship is part of the larger EPSRC-funded LACE project, led
by Richard Jones <http://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/~rej>, with co-investigator
Andy King <http://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/~amk>, at the Computing Laboratory
in the University of Kent, Canterbury. This studentship will provide
tuition fees (at home/EU fees level) and maintenance for a period of
three years, subject to satisfactory progression through each year of
study. The maintenance rate for 2006/7 is 12,300 pounds per annum.

Candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a first or 2:1 degree
in Computer Science or a related discipline. An appropriate degree at
Master's level would also be acceptable. Applicants should have an interest
in source code analysis and Java virtual machines.

The LACE: Lifetime Aware Collection project

The goal of the LACE project is to construct a garbage collection
framework that combines a new heap architecture based on our Beltway
collector framework with novel allocation and collection policies that
exploit programs' 'object demographics' in order to increase throughput.
In a nutshell, by avoiding processing objects until they are very likely
to be dead, we expect to be able to reduce GC costs substantially. The
studentship is expected to work especially on new static and dynamic
analyses that can identify object lifetimes, and thus better guide allocation
and collection policies.
