Traversing the stack frame and identifying "references"

Hi,

I was looking for the reference material on techniques of stopping all the 
threads of execution and traversing the active stack frames for identifying 
live objects. While I found numerous papers/articles discussing algorithms 
for garbage collections, I am not fiding the ones which also discuss the 
implementation details of garbage collection for some languages (like Java 
or C++).
