RE : [SK] A New Keyhole Type!

This stuff reminds me one key idea of the Jeff Raskin exposed in "The =
Human Interface": everything ona computer should be modless ! By =
modless, Raskin think no only about dialog boxes, but also abut working =
context ! It means the computer behavior or the way we use keyboard, =
mouse, etc.. should not depend on the fact we are using an "edit mode" =
or not, or even one application or another ! Raskin even follow his =
though to the end of the road: power "on" or "off" is even considered as =
a mode !
I would say: when we think about it, it's really disturbuing. My first =
reaction was to say: Hey! Ther's plenty of case where it doesn't works ! =
But ... what if he is right ? Obviously, I'm far from being as visionary =
as the creator of the Mac Intosh was !

The same thing that would happen if you opened a one-page document, =
clicked
Print, then specified pages 2-7.  I don't see the problem.

But that's not the issue.  The issue is that modal dialogs are a keyhole
and, as such, we should look for alternatives, taking into account the =
pros
and cons of each design when coming to a decision.  Rather than talk =
about
Print dialogs and what could or could not be (thus risking being blinded =
by
what we are used to), I think a better example is the bookmark =
management
window, which is modal under IE6 and modeless under Firefox.  Now that =
we
know that both are possible, we are in a better position to reason about
their relative merits.
