I think there are two points on which one should pursuit awareness:

1) software is not an art in itself. Like bass lines in music, it can
be a brilliant foundation but its role is supportive and should serve
the song and disappear. What matters is the end result to end users.

2) software is a craft, not an industry. It takes ages to develop
something working and many craftsmen did not learn in established
courses, but gathered knowledge from other practitioners, random
sources, observation and experience.
