According with the book Code Complete by Steve McConnell (written in the 90s, here you can find that and other books by him: http://www.stevemcconnell.com/books.htm) if you read a book a year you over the average of the practitioners of our profession. I'm not sure about the accuracy of that figures or how that might have changed in the following years.
