Just consider what it is that this guy and the company he is working for 
are making their money with.

Apart from that, I don't think this is the year to learn JavaScript. In 
fact, I don't think JavaScript as a language is interesting enough for 
any year. You learn JavaScript for the things you can do with it. In the 
past 15 years the major reason was that there was hardly any other way 
to write code that runs in browsers. That's the only reason that 
JavaScript has become pervavise, if not always popular.

JavaScript might become the default embedded scripting language, as Avdi 
suggests. It's a suitable choice and as long as it is really used for 
simple scripting purposes, the parts of JavaScript you have to deal with 
are so trivial (if you already are a programmer!) that you can pick them 
up as you go. You might already know as much JavaScript as you're ever 
going to need.
