ORM is an antipattern

This is my first post to this list but I am diving into a big ball of
JPA at work and I'd like to know what people here think about this
article:

I confess to having a bad experience with Hibernate in the past, but
for the most part I've been fortunate to have worked in Smalltalk with
a native ODBMS. I'll admit to being smug on more than one occasion
about not having to deal with O/R mapping.
I've been responsible for managing legacy systems before, and most of
the "venerable" apps were pure SQL (e.g. high-volume trading apps) or
ancient legacy stuff written in IMS. Our J2EE apps were often very
leaky with high support costs (but not always, and I was usually only
peripherally involved with these artifacts).
It seems to me the wins with ORM come at the early stages of very
simple projects. as long as you don't have high data volumes, it's a
good approach.
Has anyone had good experiences with O/R frameworks that have gone on
to become well-settled, robust legacy apps long after they've been
rolled out?
