Greg,
   NAS enables user to set real server time out, virtual service time 
out and persistent session timeout(comes in 25.0). The age of the 
session is set to real server time out if virtual service time out is 
not configured.
If there is no packet flow in the connection, the session will age out 
for that configured time.
Its like ideal session time out.

persistent time out is for persistent sessions and comes with 25.0

Note - It is as per knowledge on NAS but not on Alteon 180e
