Somehow I think a real cost analysis with hardware as an asset amortized over 3 years, and taking into account significant load scenarios, it might not look so rosy. Factor into that the featureset you get on ADCs like F5, Netscaler etc.. and you're losing a lot of features that we and our customers depend on dearly to control costs. That said, I guess Akamai is an early example of load-balancing-in-the-cloud. On demand and pay-per-use.
