Chris,

When you define a health check it is not directly related to a server in a farm so you can check from WSD/AppDirector any device in your network, including remote ones, using the destination IP of the check and the gateway to be used by the check. So the response to your question is yes.

Here you have a list of methods (available in the last AppDirector version) you can use for health check:

ARP

Citrix App Browsing

Citrix ICA

DHCP

Diameter

DNS

FIX

FTP

HTTP

IMAP4

LDAP

LDAPS

NNTP

Physical Port

Ping

POP3

Radius Accounting

Radius Authentication

RTSP

SIP TCP

SIP UDP

SMTP

SNMP

SSL Hello

HTTPS

TCP Port

TCP User Defined

UDP Port

TFTP

I agree, the message was difficult to understand.

Juan, I have a quick question. I think the WSD/AppDirectors do an excellent job of healthchecks. Do they have the ability to do those checks against other systems? For instance, can they send RADIUS requests to devices they aren't load balancing? Could they send HTTP requests to a Virtual IP rather than the Server IPs? Some folks might not be interested in being alerted if only one of the servers in the farm is down so the ability to send healthchecks against the farm IP would be valuable.

Chris,

Maybe you are correct regarding the request from Mr. Anand and I understood it incorrectly but I'm sorry with this kind of messages it is quite difficult to provide an accurate response. Now he has both cases and solutions.

Thanks,

Juan Carlos

Juan, he wants to check this from a remote machine though. The WSD will only check the server it's load balancing.

By running the check from an external machine, he's able to validate the network path, the farm status, and the server status.

We have a couple WSDs still in production and are alerting on their health monitoring. We also, though, configured external monitoring so the requests are routing through the WSD.

Hi,

Using WSD there is no need for run any external script. Using the built-in health monitor feature you can define a health check using HTTP request and there you can define to look for a specific URL in the request (and other interesting parameters) and specific codes in the response from the Web Server. Every time the status response of the check changes (from success to fail and vice versa) you will get a trap from the device.

Hope this helps,
