I have spent most of my career trying to make this point. Too often, systems 
are built under too much pressure to "deliver the goods" as rapidly as 
possible, using a process that will not support that sort of effort. If this is to be 
the way software is built, some effort must be put into finding a design 
(i.e., engineering  a system) that minimizes the difficulties in achieving 
reasonable maintainability and sustainability.
