I think XP came much later, but you'd have to ask
Ward and Cunningham to be sure.  Certainly, your=20
colleague was not the first to get fed up with=20
approaches that are up-front "spec-heavy".

Unfortunately, swinging the pendulum fully the
other way and coding without any spec work at all
is also not the answer.  The fact that AM exists
means that agile minds agree some spec work,
either before or perhaps interleaved with, coding=20
is necessary.

The key is achieving an appropriate balance.  Where=20
this balance point lies can vary with project as=20
it depends on both technical and management factors.
