I stopped using slides to get much more interactive with the audience, where quite often they build the material as we go. Using Training from the Back of the Room much of the material has an exercise with me facilitating the discussions, asking powerful questions, and occasionally sharing material by writing or drawing on flipcharts.  I also found that slides constrained me in that I could never get the "right" order for my slides and thus had to jump around in the slides. Without slides that constraint is removed and I find that there is a more natural flow to the material because it is easier to facilitate discussion around topics are raised in the moment. Not to say that every topic gets covered when it arises (through questions most often), but the opportunity exists and is easier to work into the flow. Notice the emphasis on "my" above. Without slides the ideas become own by the class rather than by me and my slides.
 

 I actually do use a couple of slides in two cases. When I'm facilitating an exercise that has required data or a set of instructions then I will use slides for that. Really this is just practical to save time writing or having to give handouts. The second case is when I have a picture that is either powerful or too complex to draw. However in that case the slide is mostly background and I use it to evoke a reaction.
