Do you use Driver/Navigator when pairing?

A colleague and I are co-authoring an article on the value of technical
practices.  While considering pairing, we began to wonder how often the
formal pairing roles of Driver and Navigator are used versus some less
formal approach to sharing airtime and the keyboard.  What are your
observations and experience of the formal use of these roles?  Any
observations on the use of these roles are welcome. (Cross-posted to the XP
