What protocol does the terminal use? I doubt it will
be memory mapped graphics.

Most terminals are addressed by escape codes, such as
VT 52 or VT 200. When you can find (or write) a
terminal emulator, it can deliver finished screens to
a program, which can then scrape them looking for
features.

This is the moral equivalent of capture/playback, but
it's a start.
