Because ActiveX is such a freeway for malware, MS has wedged the
latest version of Internet Explorer (available with WinXP SP2), to
never launch an ActiveX control unless the user clicks "OK" (sic).

Now suppose I want to test this HTML:

  <object id="MyControl"
    classid="CLSID:D02AAC50-027E-11D3-9D8E-00C04F72D980"
    codebase="MyCabFile.CAB">
  </object>

I want to test that IE loads MyControl thru MyCabFile.CAB correctly.
(Suppose the test setUp has uninstalled MyControl, so the only way for
document.all['MyControl'] to exist is if that line successfully
reinstalls it.)

If I write a test case that calls
CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application"), that object will run
out-of-process (causing other problems), and it will silently block
while presenting an OK button to the user that I can't see. And, of
course, tests should run unattended.

Has anyone written a test rig for IE that hosts its core control,
MSHTML.DLL, inside an alternate window frame that does not restrict
ActiveX shenanigans?

How easily could one run Selenium in such an alternate frame, such as
in the AtlBrowser code sample? Has anyone already done this?
