In this case, though, and really in many complaints I hear about mouse
movements in web apps, it's about click versus hover. I liken it to a
door. In some cases I want to be able to walk up to it without it
opening. In fact, I want to have to take a manual action in order to
open it. But, in well-defined circumstances, I'm perfectly Ok with the
door opening, say when I'm walking out with my groceries.

Honestly, in my opinion, in comes down to trust, something I always harp
about to designers. Your users should be able to trust your UI that it
won't change out from underneath them. Clicks to a left menu can change
the main content, as long as the menu either stays as is, or perhaps
expands. Clicks to sub-navigation shouldn't change the main navigation.
In other words, your users should be able to trust that the UI doesn't
have unintended side-effects from normal user interactions.

I had a hard time trusting that web site. Maybe that is because I'm used
to a level of control from my mouse and from countless other web apps.
