Yep. Metakit - especially in non-standard environments - sometimes behaves
quite worrying. I think it would be time to start refactoring that throws
out Metakit and pulls in something more stable. I'd gladly accept patches
;-)

Metakit manages the free space itself. It should do the right thing, but it
does produce weird database sizes sometimes. Did I say that it would be nice
to throw out metakit? ;-)
