Actually, the dhtml back-end is just a vague plan that Alex has talked about, and that may never happen. There are two alternatives: One (that I don't really know much about -- Alex's version) that is Windows-centric, and, I believe, that uses COM. The other would have a built-in dedicated webserver and would use JavaScript, CGI, and XHTML. > You wonder about two alternatives: UIML and XUL > (am I wrong?). No, that's something else. We've been talking about adding a XUL interpreter that will read XUL and construct Anygui objects that can be rendered in any back-end (including DHTML, if we ever get that). As for the choice between various XML formats for GUI, adding another parser for UIML wouldn't be much of a problem, I guess. But none of this is very urgent until Anygui itself is fully functional, in my opinion. > What do you think about SVG? I've read on slashdot, > that SVG is become W3C proposed (yet)recommendations. Yes, but SVG is for graphics. It's very nice, but isn't very relevant for constructing GUIs. We might add a parser for SVG that drew on a Canvas or something, but SVG is much more powerful than what we can hope to implement in the foreseable future, so I don't see this as very realistic, unless we're talking about a restricted subset. See Batik and Fop (http://xml.apache.org/batik and http://xml.apache.org/fop) for some tools for rendering SVG into many other formats. [snip] > Certainly it is not very popular standard yet. There is a plug-in from Adobe that lets you use SVG with Netscape, Opera, and Microsoft Internet Explorer (and probably others) too. > I dont know, if this standard could be linked to widget-based anygui > architecture. I appreciate the suggestion. I think the best use for SVG in Anygui would be as a format for saving Canvas objects (along with e.g. PostScript etc.). -- Magnus Lie Hetland Practical Python The Anygui Project http://hetland.org http://ppython.com http://anygui.org ------------------------------------------------------- This sf.net email is sponsored by: To learn the basics of securing your web site with SSL, click here to get a FREE TRIAL of a Thawte Server Certificate: http://www.gothawte.com/rd524.html
