I'd just like to second this idea! Personally, I'd like to see a
published anygui API hit version 0.2 final with only a single reference
backend and then see the various other backends developed to support the
API after the 'official' release.

Another place that this kind of development model occurs is with the
various language translations for open source projects (e.g.,
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/status/gnome-2.2/) where the
release of software is not held up by the (many) translation efforts.
