Sounds sensible. Will this work for all platforms with these backends
(i.e. Windows and UNIX/Linux)? E.g. does both the Windows and Linux
versions of Qt support Unicode in these places?

I have no objections to adding this, except if it breaks something;
any input on that?

Also: Does it work with Python 2.1? At the moment we're supposed to
support 2.1, so... (I see no great harm in migrating to 2.2 soon,
since we're obviously still in an early stage, after all.)
