I'm fairly sure that I won't be maintainining the ctypes back end at
this time. I'm almost sure that the ctypes one (and probably msw)
suffers from leakage caused by the event loop re-entering etc etc. 

Probably the person who should have been doing that work is Thomas, but
he's already moved else where. I'm certainly not expert enough at the
analysis to figure out where we ought to grab GILS.
