We got a very nice positive reply last night from David Mertz at the PSF,
regarding the potential Python logo trademark question, which he is happy
to be shared - see below, also posted on the GitHub pull request:

Dear Peter,

We have discussed your logo, and have determined that it falls in the
"inspired by but not derived from" the Python logo category.
Therefore, this usage is outside the scope of our copyright and we
have no concern about its use.

Speaking just personally, FWIW, I think the new design is very
attractive, and wish you and the project the best success (I've used
and followed the Biopython project myself).
