I'm considering breaking Python 2.3 compatibility in upcoming releases, what this really means is that I'd like to start using some of the language advances that Python has made in the last *six* years (2.3 was released in mid 2003). Since i know a number of organizations still using 2.4, I won't deprecate that at the same time (as much as I'd like to). I'd like to get a gauge of how many people are still using Cheetah on Python 2.3; if it's a sizable number, I'll adjust my plans and maintain a "Cheetah 2.3" branch that will have certain commits backported to it for some amount of time.
