I've gone ahead and committed this and pushed it to my rtyler/next branch [1],
if you feel so inclined to contribute more in the future, I posted an overview

Tests are passing on Python 2.4/2.5/2.6 [2] so I think this will be fine to be
included in 2.4.1, thanks :)
