Ignorant Newbie question

I confess that I know nothing about C, so I'm aware that this is going to 
be a dumb question.  Hope someone can help me out anyhow.

I would like to call the following C function from python:

DWORD function1(BYTE* pbtData, DWORD& dwDataLen);

where

#define DWORD unsigned long
#define BYTE unsigned char

The return value seems to be some error code (0 for success) and both 
pbtData and dwDataLen are expected to be set by the function (i.e., are output)

I better don't tell you what I tried...
