Yes, ignore the Apple installed stuff where possible and use MacPorts. Nearly all important libraries are available like this and, more importantly, the ports are kept up to date. It's weird that given that Snow Leopard is x86 only they even supply a fat binary. However, I must add that Python 26 did not install yesterday and the psycopg2 port isn't the newest but it is relatively easy to get the port information updated.
