$ cp build/lib.linux-i686-2.5/pysqlite2/_sqlite.so pysqlite2/.

Importing pysqlite2 from here shows a more recent SQLite version, but
the error occurs unchanged (fortunaltely for me, otherwise I'd have
something to explain). I feel comfortable now that it is not related
to a threadsafe SQLite build. Other evidence is when I deliberately
configure SQLite with --disable-threadsafe. That shows completely
different errors when running the test script. But your concern was
mixing up with the system's SQLite and that is ruled out now.

I can not see any other dependencies than the SuSE 9. linux kernel
and system libraries (tried both versions 2.5 and 2.3 of Python). But
a solotion is not required, it is not a too rigid restriction to
require a more up to date linux than mine. I'm just very glad that
everything is allright then. On the other hand we may wish to run
software on a hosted linux, which we can not upgrade, I intend some
test there and let you know.

Thanks, and sorry for bothering, Edzard

Thanks, Edzard
