That does seem little off.  [However, I generally use Gentoo's package
manager to build install pretty much everything (including Python).]
One normally does the "make" as a normal user, then "make install" as
root. I'd say it's a bit rude for the latter to leave root-owned files
in the build directory.

Then how will it be able to install files in the appropriate
system-wide locations (e.g. under /usr/local/)?
