Hi Christopher!

Thank you very much for the elucidations; now I know that this is a
feature (also, the initial array seems to be mapped directly to the
image representation in memory, which implies that it is visible as read
only from NumPy unless you make a full copy of it). 

Your suggested solution works well for me.
