Hello Jack, I see you're trying to install a lot of different python packages (matplotlib is a bear to install from source!). Have you considered the enthought distribution (www.enthought.com)? It has downloads for Mac, as well as other platforms, and has all of the science-type packages already there, including matplotlib, scipy, numpy, etc...
