I've gotten it to work on a number of Macs without much
difficulty. I have a local Python installation compiled
from source, though -- I don't know what the experience
is like for someone trying to install it all from binaries.

As far as I remember, my approach was:

* Install SDL framework binaries in /Library/Frameworks
* Compile and install libjpeg and libpng in /usr/local
* Compile and install pygame in local Python
