how to use i18n?

Optik 1.5 offers internationalisation (according to the readme). How 
do I actually use it? I compiled optik.de.po that comes with the 
distribution in the po-folder to optik.mo and moved it to 
/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/ and checked that LANGUAGE, LANG, 
LC_ALL and LC_MESSAGES were set to de_DE. I set permissions to 755.

But no change and no error message. Is there something else I have to 
do?
