Ok I guess it has to do with the fact that the 2 networks have different address ranges. The Ubuntu machine does not have wireless so it is connected with a cable to my Mac. The Mac has a wireless address in the 10.0.1.x range. My Windows machine also has an address in this range, and it works perfectly from there. If I start the name server there I see it on the Mac.
