That error message arises from trying to use wx.StandardPaths before the
App object has been
created, which is no longer allowed since version 2.8. I fear that
pythoncard has not been updated to reflect that change since there have
been no releases since 2006.

For my development on windows I've switched over to Ironpython and build my
user interfaces with XAML.

If you are looking for basic GUI stuff, there is EasyGUI but that project
is frozen as of March 2013.

You can check out http://wiki.python.org/moin/GuiProgramming for more
possibilities.

You might also want to check out Tidesdk.org. It allows you to build your
user interface in HTML5/javascript but run with a python backend and wrap
everything up into an installer and exe.
