It's all thanks to Robin Becker.  The rest of us simply managed to
keep other customers from interrupting him for a few days.

It's hard to describe how complex this was, as our code deals
fundamentally with bits, bytes and real strings in many places and
across C and other peoples' Python code.

There's probably still not much point in others joining in.  Hopefully
in a few more days there will be a package people can play with.
